IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden survives horrific Firestone 600 crash
IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden miraculously walked away with only a broken right collarbone and a small fracture in his right hand after a horrific crash during the Firestone 600 in Texas.
Newgarden was attempting to pass longtime friend Conor Daly near the start/finish line of the 42nd lap when Daly lost traction and his car snapped violently to the right, smashing Newgarden into the wall.
The impact flipped Newgarden's car onto its right side, leaving his open cockpit exposed as the vehicles briefly separated before Daly's car drove him into the SAFER barrier on the outside of the track for a second time.

The two-car wreck occurred as Newgarden attempted to pass longtime friend Conor Daly's car (the white and green car pictured behind him) and Daly lost control of his vehicle
Newgarden, 25, (pictured giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed on Sunday) suffered a broken right collarbone and a small fracture in his right hand
Newgarden, 25, was able to climb out of his car but only stood briefly beside it before he crumbled into a sitting position on the track at Texas Motor Speedway.
He could be seen pointing to his right shoulder as he talked with safety officials. He was then placed on a stretcher, where he gave a thumbs-up to the crowd with his left arm.

The young driver seemed to be in good spirits at the hospital, posting a picture from his bed on Instagram and writing that he would be 'ready to kick some a**' in the near future.
'I'll be ready to rock soon enough,' he continued. 'I'm gonna drink a ton of milkshakes, heal my bones and get my a** back into the car. I'm so fortunate to have so many wonderful people in my corner.'
Newgarden, who was expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday night, wrote that he was also 'very happy' that 24-year-old Daly was okay as well.
Daly, who was not injured, apologized to Newgarden at the infield care center and took full blame for the crash, calling it a 'rookie mistake'.

The cars were heavily damaged, as was the SAFER barrier that absorbed the impact when Newgarden hit the wall during Sunday's race
'He's a tough kid, I grew up with him,' Daly said. 'I feel so bad. To ruin someone's race is never cool.'
Daly was one of the last drivers on the track still driving with the same tires he began the race with when he lost control while exiting Turn 4.
'It felt like the right rear (tire) just went and lost all grip and basically drifted from (Turns) 3 to 4,' Daly said, according to USA Today.
'I couldn't get out of (the throttle) quick enough. It's my fault. I lost it in front of Josef.'
Both cars were heavily damaged, as was the SAFER barrier that absorbed the impact when Newgarden hit the wall.
'In a situation like that it doesn't really matter whose car it is,' said Ed Carpenter, Newgarden's car owner and teammate.
'Obviously I went by and saw it was bright green, and just asked if Josef was all right. From what I can tell, it could have been a whole lot worse. As a team owner, you don't really care about the car.'
Both Carpenter and IndyCar president Jay Frye said Newgarden's car and the SAFER barriers did a 'very good job' protecting the racer.

Newgarden released a statement thanking IndyCar and the Holmatro Safety Team, noting that their response after the accident was 'amazing'.
'I'm banged up a little bit but I'm generally okay,' he said. 'That's all thanks to IndyCar and all the work everyone within the series does.'
Newgarden, a Nashville native, has been hailed as a rising star in the IndyCar series.
He placed third in last month's Indianapolis 500 and was ranked fourth in the 2016 points standings before the Firestone 600.
Daly, from Noblesville, Indiana, is currently racing in his first full IndyCar season and placed second in the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix last week.
Only 71 of the scheduled 248 laps of the Fortune 600 were completed before heavy rain brought the race to a halt.
It was the second time the race, originally scheduled for Saturday, had to be postponed because of the weather.
As there was a 50 percent chance of rain on Monday, the resumption of the race was rescheduled to August 27.
